Navicular disease affects the navicular bone of the foot, causing insufficient blood supply and is affected by excessive strain or jarring. This may be the result of changes in shoeing, exercise routine, or excessive work on hard ground.

The symptoms are severe lameness.

Veterinary advice should be sought. Good shoeing and a vasodilator drug can keep the horse sound but long term soundness cannot be guaranteed.
