Measuring A Horse For A Rug

Measuring A Horse For A Rug

Horse rugs are sized at 3 inch intervals (ie 4'3", 4'6", 4'9", etc) and to measure a horse to ascertain the size of rug needed the horse is measured from the centre of the breast, along the side of the horse to the point of the buttock.

As most horses don't measure exactly to the rug size intervals it is better to get a rug that is bigger rather than one that is smaller. For example if a horse measures 6'1" or 6'2" is it better to get a 6'3" rug than a 6'0" rug.

Some manufacturers specify rug sizes in just inches rather than feet and inches although still size the rugs according to the 3 inch intervals. See conversion table for rug sizes in feet and inches converted to inches.
