Feeding A Grass Kept Horse

Feeding a grass kept horseHorses kept at grass will continually graze, feeding naturally. Any grazing pasture should be well maintained and free from poisonous plants.

During hot periods in summer the grass may become parched and scarce so the horse may need additional feeding to compensate for this. Hay is the best substitute when grass is scarce and feeding twice a day is best.

During the winter when the grass does not grow, pasture becomes boggy or covered in snow hay should be fed and is best fed twice a day. It may also be necessary depending on the severity of the winter to feed concentrate feed.

If a horse kept at grass is being ridden regularly and/or carrying out hard work then concentrate feed may also be required to increase energy, stamina and to maintain condition.
