The Highland pony has inhabited Northern Scotland for many years and was used as an agricultural pony and hauling timber. Highland ponies were also used as a hunting pony and driving pony.

The Highland Pony Society was formed in 1923.

The Highland pony is currently listed as 'at risk' by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

The Highland pony is dun, grey, black, brown, bay or occasionally liver chestnut with silver mane and tail. Many Highland ponies have a dorsal stripe and may show zebra markings on the legs.
