The Hanoverian horse originates from North West Germany and where it was used as a carriage horse, farm horse and also for military use as a calvary horse and artillery horse. Later it became increasingly used as a riding horse.

In 1888 the Hanoverian Warmblood Stud-book was formed and in 1922 the studbook duties were passed to the Verband hannoverscher Warmblutzüchter (the Society of Hanoverian Warmblood Breeders).

Today the Hanoverian is valued as a competition horse.
