Fell Pony

History Of The Fell Pony

The Fell pony is related to the Dales Pony and inhabits the hills and mountains of Cumbria. It is believed that the Fell pony is derived from various horses brought to England from Europe during roman times and breeding with wild native ponies.

Fell ponies were used as pack ponies carrying slate, copper, lead and iron ore from the mines. During the 18th and 19th centuries, as canals, roadways and railways were introduced, Fell pony numbers declined and they was mostly used for light agricultural work, shepherding, pulling traps and for trotting races and in the 20th century Fell pones were occasionally used as pit ponies in the mines.

The Fell Pony Society was formed in 1916 and numbers were very low in 1945. However, during the 1950s riding as a pleasure activity started to become popular and the number of ponies registered has gradually risen ever since.

The Fell pony stands 13 to 14 hh.

Colour Of The Fell Pony

The Fell pony is usually black but bay, brown and grey can occur.

Breed Characteristics Of The Fell Pony

The Fell pony has a small head with broad forehead, sloping shoulders, muscular body, strong back and hindquarters, full mane and tail. Fell ponies are strong with good stamina, active movement and a fast trot.

Temperament Of The Fell Pony

The Fell pony is lively and hard working.

The Fell pony is a good general purpose pony, ideal trekking pony and driving pony.
